Disclaimer: This is a long post about my dad’s situation, my personal realization and why it may matter for you. Just want to share some personal tips (which you may or may not appreciate). Read on if you wish, and I hope this post can help you in some way or another.

1. The Background
My dad was diagnosed with high cholesterol and have high risk of stroke after showing various stroke symptoms (numb in 1-half of the face, hands, difficulty in speaking out when he wishes to, etc), somewhere in August 2012 (which is last year). He’s been on medication to put his conditions under control and it was all pretty until recently.

2. The Relapse
On 17th May (Fri), my dad felt sequences of headaches and couldn’t sleep well. He didn’t put too much thought into it until 20th (Mon) when he suddenly felt numbness in his face, hands, and realized he couldn’t speak (even when he tried hard to get words out of his mouth). Plus he was having weak legs and could hardly walk too.

The alarm bell was too large to be ignored now. I was told by my mum that my dad was so terrified of those symptoms that he cried (as a man in the traditional front, he’s “not supposed to” even tear).

3. Consultations & Hospitalization
My younger brother and I brought my dad to our family doctor’s clinic 1st thing in the morning, and were referred to report to the hospital to do thorough scanning as it seemed to be out of his capability (the clinic doesn’t have advanced equipment for detailed evaluation) already.

After hours of blood test, x-ray, CT scan and waiting time (the hospital is at over-capacity lacking manpower and beds for patients), we finally met with the doctor who decided that my dad should be admitted for further observations.

Met the night-shift doctor and having explained the full scenario to him, we stayed with my dad till visiting time was over, before we headed off for our supposed dinner, looking forward to hearing news of his scans the next morning.

4. Scan Results
The doctor-in-charge revealed to me over the phone that my dad’s stroke was a result of blockage of 1 of the 2 front blood vessels (2 front and 2 back) and there’s nothing they can do to “unblock” it. What we CAN do now is to ensure my dad gets plenty of greens and fruits, plus totally quitting smoking (he’s a heavy smoker) immediately.

5. My Realization & Why You Should (or Shouldn’t) Care
Health - A very common ‘occupational hazard’ that we have is that we may be working so hard (or much) that we totally neglect it- Lack of exercise, Lack of Sleep, Irregular hours of rest, etc. I’m guilty as charged as well. Currently, I’m working on improving my lifestyle – have at least 3-4 days of exercise with the inclusion of healthy eating habits (means cutting down on the unhealthy food that I always eat).

Also, if you happen to be a smoker, do yourself and your family a favor and quit it already (not overnight of course but at least attempt to decrease the intake gradually). The doctor said that the reason for the relapse is largely due to the heavy intake of cigarettes on my dad’s part, causing blockage of the blood vessels.

** No point earning so much money, only to spend all of them on medical bills, Right?

Pay Attention to Your Family - Sometimes we may be so busy or engrossed in work that we neglected to keep ourselves “in the zone” on our family members’ matters. The reason we’re in this business is mostly to provide good lives to ourselves and for our loved ones, so don’t forget to show more care and concern to your family and your loved ones.

Remember that if Paypal wants to limit you, they will limit you straight away anyway (Lol), so they won’t be sending you an email to ask you to log into your account.

Also, when receiving emails which ask you to log into your account, always be extra vigilant and verify/check out the email addresses, the email content and of course use a little “common sense” to think thru if that particular email makes any sense.

When in doubt, always seek a second opinion.
